MYS Announces Vehicle for Change (VFC) Project: An auto-theft prevention initiative
March 14, 2008

The incidence of auto theft in Manitoba continues to rise and has become a prominent issue for the province and in particular the city of Winnipeg. Many existing strategies are in place in an effort to reverse this trend, and MYS would like to do more.

Vehicle for Change (VFC) is a project of PAY and is geared towards youth who are on the cusp of involvement in auto theft. VFC seeks to connect with youth through the provision of interactive, fun and educational workshops. Ideally VFC will provide youth with information and tools to assist them in making healthy decisions and deter them from further involvement in auto theft. VFC will also focus on supporting youth to connect positively to the community in as many ways as possible including affordable and accessible recreation and programming opportunities.

VFC programming will consist of group workshops, where youth will be guided by facilitators in examining the reasons why they have become involved in auto theft and vehicle crimes. The consequences of continuing involvement in auto theft related offences and how to make healthier decisions would be presented to youth participants. VFC will examine what additional resources and supports are needed to prevent further involvement. The project will also include recreational activities that are high energy and adrenaline filled, such as rock climbing and go-cart racing. This will demonstrate their ability to get a rush from positive activities and help build their social and team work life skills.

The VFC Project will also include guest speakers from many different facets. The program will include traditional Aboriginal and cultural programming activities such as sweat lodges and teachings. Many other special events are planned to help create a connection for youth to their community and to introduce them to additional supports and resources in the community once they have completed the program.
